To create a multifunctional facility which incorporates all the requested by the client features as well as additional use of mace store. Following the demolition of 9 mercers row and waterloo house the only remaining structure from the site will be the house of Balou. The floors will be removed and exploration of ideas to be made. New structure will be located where waterloo house was and 9 mercers row, the building will be connected above the alley. To promote the alleyway usage I will explore different ideas concerned with lightening up the space, providing shelter from rain and protecting from the birds. Residential element will have a different entry point and will be separated from the library entry. There will be two entries into the library.
Use of contextual research has impacted on the concept, choice of materials and structure style, to keep within the heritage of the site I will investigate precedent with a similar form and structure with evident links to the site.
To ensure my users have good thermal comfort when using the building I will explore different types of services both active and passive. Renewable energy sources and environmental technologies will be researched in further stages. Overall the building technologies should decrease the level of carbon footprint in various stages of the life cycle.
Structurally the building should be able to resist the environmental loads, choice of the right materiality and structural grid will be justified along with an evidence of how the different types of loads are distributed through structure.
Library should provide its users with a functional circulation, all facilities listed in the research need to be included. Library will be sharing its space with cafe/bookstore. Library should be open with higher than minimum ceilings heights. The space will be exposed to the outside to show relationships between spaces as well as to attract potential users. Further diagrams and arrangement drawings will indicate the entries and different zones. Overall the space should be user friendly with variety of access and fire exits.
Residential area will be separated from the library although in the same building, it will have its own entrance and will provide the users with essential facilities. The orientation and layout should celebrate the views onto the market square or mercers row. It should also provide its users with comfortable living conditions in terms of personal space and safety. It will have its own entrance and stairway but the bin storage area will be shared among with other facilities. The residential area will obey the building regulation fire exit codes.
Cafe/bookstore will be located on the ground level along with other social spaces. The facility will only serve snacks and drinks and therefore wont be very large, it should provide the users with enough personal space, different types of refreshments and snacks as well as products in form of traditional or digital media. Cafe/bookstore will provide all essential facilities such as kitchen, counter, seating area, book shelf's and digital medium storage. The bin storage will be located close to the cafe to allow easy access, the space will be shared by the library, residential and cafe bins.
Mace store will remain as is although there will be a relocation with a potential increase in size depending on the space allocated. The store will have its own storage, office and staff toilet. It will maintain its user group through the same type of product sale and similar location. There will be an access to the store through separate doors for services and delivery, the customers will use different doors to access shop floor.
