Site Analysis

To understand the site I have produced a site map indicating the car and pedestrian traffic, indicating foot access to maket square and displaying exisiting businesses and restaurants that I will compete against. Further research enabled me to understand the density of my urban landscape.

I have gathered information and conclusions in regards to contextual and enviromental research of the surrounding area. The market square has a very rich history as well as the surrounding buildings, a lot of the neighboruing buildings are protected just like the house of Balou. Stone appears to be the most common material from which the buildings are made out of, the roof line of the landscape is close to being level with one big exception and thats the Waterloo House, building which is only 50 years old and stands unoccpied. I intend on designing the multifunctional facility in a contemporary style yet I'm going to relate to the architecture of the local area, structurally and aesthetically. The new building will promote use of glass to show relationship between internal and external spaces.

Enviromental reserach allowed me to understand the climate and weather conditions that I am dealing with. Few conclusions were made and further research was carried out in form of thermal comfort diagram. The diagram displays that I can use passive solar radiation to heat up the building for most time however I still need to incorporate active services and mechanical ventilation. Surrounding enviroment on the east of my site includes fountain which is a refurbished version and much smaller than the iconic fountain which was located on the market square and taken down early in last century. The new fountain is made out of stone showing a clear relationship to the surrounding buildings though its materiality. Two trees surrounding the fountain are protected and therefore have to be kept. The area itself provides a good gathering space for the entry to my library. Another issue with the enviroment is the weathering, as the research shown my site will expierience a lot of rain and I even gathered evidence of the weathering on the neighborouing buildings. Different types of material and render both show signs of weathering. This is something to be considered in further research of materiality.
